Delta will finally retire. om 06 January 2014 its last remaining Douglas DC-9 series 50 jet from its fleet. Delta first introduced the jet to its fleet in 1965. Once it merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008, it once again inherited the DC-9 jet. Since 1965 Delta has operated a total of 305 of the DC-9 jets.

The last set of flight numbers for the DC-9 will also carry significance with flight 1965 representing the year it was first introduced and flight 2014 the year it finished service. Aviation enthusiasts have pretty much booked out these flights. Fares are still available at upwards of USD 700.00 one way showing the the love there is for this jet.

The DC-9 legacy will continue at Delta however, with the derivative aircraft MD-95 and soon with the Boeing 717s which have been acquired from Southwest’s subsidiary Air Tran.
