Air Canada has officially confirmed it will add Brisbane, Australia to its route network from 2016. This will be the carrier’s second Australian station after Sydney which already has daily 777 services. The Canadian carrier will offer year round thrice weekly 787-9 non-stop services from Vancouver to Brisbane from 17 June 2016.
“Air Canada continues to strategically expand its international network with the addition of our second Australian destination – Brisbane, capital of Queensland and the third most populous city in Australia. The new route increases our presence in the Asia-Pacificmarket at a time when trade and travel in the region and between North America is growing, with a further boost expected from the Trans-Pacific Partnership now under negotiation. Already, Air Canada commits $2 billion worth of aircraft to the Pacific market each day and Brisbane is the third new Pacific route we have announced in the past year, after Toronto-Tokyo Haneda and Vancouver-Osaka,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada President and CEO, who is participating today in the 2015 Australia-Canada Economic Leadership Forum in Vancouver.
Melbourne was also considered a possibility, however there is no indication at this time Air Canada has any firm plans to start this route. The carriers briefly offered services to Melbourne in the early 2000s via Honolulu.
